About Wallonia
French-speaking Wallonia was the first fully industrialized area in continental Europe. For more than 150 years, Wallonia was the more prosperous half of Belgium, thanks to extensive industrialization, which was second only to the United Kingdom. But as the industrial age declined, so did the economy of Wallonia, and since the 1950’s the Walloon region has been working to redefine itself. Drawing on its industrial history, Wallonia leads the world in certain specialized fields, including glass production, cyclotrons and aviation parts.

Wallonia continues to develop its high-tech sector, both in manufacturing research and diagnostic instruments in the biotechnology space and in software development, especially in the area of video compression.
